<div><p>Because you can use IBM<sup>®</sup> Toolbox for Java™ both on your server and your client,
the compatibility issues affect both running on a server and connecting from
a client back to a server.</p>
<div class="section"><h4 class="sectiontitle">Running IBM Toolbox for Java on your servers</h4><p>To install IBM Toolbox
for Java (licensed
program 5722-JC1 V5R4M0) on an iSeries™ system, the server must be running
one of the following:</p>
<ul><li><img src="./delta.gif" alt="Start of change" />i5/OS™ Version
5 Release 4<img src="./deltaend.gif" alt="End of change" /></li>
<li>i5/OS Version
5 Release 3</li>
<li>i5/OS Version
5 Release 2</li>
</ul>
<p>You can install only one version of the IBM Toolbox for Java licensed program on the system. To
install a different version, first remove the existing IBM Toolbox for Java licensed program.</p>

<div class="section"><h4 class="sectiontitle">Using IBM Toolbox for Java to connect from a client back to the
server</h4><p>You can use different versions of IBM Toolbox for Java on a client and on the server to which
you are connecting. To use IBM Toolbox for Java to access data and resources on an iSeries system,
the <strong>server to which you are connecting</strong> must be running one of the following:</p>
<ul><li><img src="./delta.gif" alt="Start of change" />i5/OS Version
5 Release 4<img src="./deltaend.gif" alt="End of change" /></li>
<li>i5/OS Version
5 Release 3</li>
<li>i5/OS Version
5 Release 2</li>
</ul>
<p>The following table shows the compatibility requirements for installing IBM
Toolbox for Java on and connecting back to different versions of i5/OS.</p>
<div class="note"><span class="notetitle">Note:</span> IBM Toolbox
for Java does
not support forward compatibility. You cannot install IBM Toolbox for Java on or use it to connect to a server
that runs a more recent version of i5/OS. For example, if you are using the
version of IBM Toolbox
for Java that
ships with i5/OS V5R2,
you cannot install it on or connect to a server that runs i5/OS V5R4.</div>
