Manually edit HTTP Server

This topic provides information about how to manually edit your
HTTP Server configuration without the IBM® Web Administration for i5/OS™ interface.

Important: Information
for this topic supports the latest PTF levels for HTTP Server for i5/OS .
It is recommended that you install the latest PTFs to upgrade to the latest
level of the HTTP Server for i5/OS. Some of the topics documented here are
not available prior to this update. See http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/software/http/services/service.htm for more information.

Attention: It is strongly suggested that any editing to the HTTP
Server configuration file be done through the IBM Web Administration for i5/OS interface.
Improper modifications to your configuration file could make your HTTP Server
unusable. Modifications to the configuration file manually should only be
performed by advanced users.

The IBM Web Administration for i5/OS interface has been
designed to modify the HTTP Server configuration file by applying changes
made to the various forms and wizards supplied by the IBM Web Administration for i5/OS interface.
Use of the forms and wizards greatly decreases the potential for user error
and helps maintain an error-free configuration file.

Optionally, the configuration file may be edited manually. When the configuration
file has been modified manually, the IBM Web Administration for i5/OS interface does
not perform the usual error checking that is done when using the IBM Web Administration for i5/OS interface.
Any changes made to the configuration file directly should be done with caution.

As a precaution, do the following before you modify the configuration file
manually:

Save a backup of your configuration file before manually editing. See Manage backup files for HTTP Server for more information.

Keep track of any changes you make to your configuration file.

In addition, after each modification, test your configuration by stopping
and starting your HTTP Server. Verify the directives you manually configured
have the desired effect.
