<h1 class="topictitle1">Create an IPv6 local area network</h1>
<div><p>This scenario describes how to create an IPv6 local area network.</p>
<div class="section"><h4 class="sectiontitle">Situation</h4><p>IPv6 will eventually replace
IPv4 as the Internet standard. Consequently, your company decides to implement
IPv6 for its financial operations and purchases a new accounting application
that uses IPv6 for connectivity. The application needs to connect to another
instance of the application that is located on a different server connected
to the site Ethernet local area network (LAN). Your job is to configure your
server for IPv6 so that your firm may start using the accounting application.
The following figure illustrates the network setup in this scenario. </p>
<br /><img src="rzai2500.gif" alt="This illustrates an IPv6 local area network (LAN). A description follows the graphic" /><br /></div>
<div class="section"><img src="./delta.gif" alt="Start of change" /><h4 class="sectiontitle">Solution</h4><p>To create an
IPv6 LAN, you must configure an Ethernet line description. IPv6 packets travel
between iSeries™ servers
and clients on the network as employees use the accounting application. </p>
<p>Setup
requirements include:</p>
<ul><li>i5/OS™ Version
5 Release 4</li>
<li>iSeries Access
for Windows® and iSeries Navigator
(Network component of iSeries Navigator)</li>
<li>The server must first have TCP/IP configured and have an IPv4 address
because IPv6 must be configured through iSeries Navigator. Currently iSeries Navigator
only connects using IPv4. If you have not configured the server for IPv4,
see <a href="rzai2firsttime.htm#firsttime">Configure TCP/IP for the first
time</a> before IPv6 can be configured on your server.</li>
</ul>
<img src="./deltaend.gif" alt="End of change" /></div>
<div class="section"><img src="./delta.gif" alt="Start of change" /><h4 class="sectiontitle">Configuration</h4><p>To
configure IPv6, you must use iSeries Navigator. IPv6 can only be configured from iSeries Navigator,
and cannot be configured from the character-based interface. </p>
<p>Start
the IPv6 stack using the STRIP6 (*YES) parameter on the STRTCP command. Use
the actions on individual lines in the <strong>Lines</strong> folder to specify line
configuration options. For information about having IPv6 addresses configured
automatically by the iSeries Navigator, see <a href="rzai2configipv6saa.htm">Configure IPv6 stateless address autoconfiguration</a>.</p>
