<div><p>The best time to start device parity protection is when you add new or
nonconfigured disk units. The <a href="rzalyadd.htm">Add a disk unit or disk pool</a> has
steps for including disk units in a parity set and starting device parity
protection. It is also possible to start device parity protection at a later
time.</p>
<div class="section"><h4 class="sectiontitle">RAID 5 parity set</h4><ul><li>Systems with IOAs released after V5R2 hold a minimum number of 3 disk
units in a parity set. The maximum number of disk units in a parity set is
18.<div class="note"><span class="notetitle">Note:</span> For systems with IOAs released after OS/400<sup>®</sup> V5R2, the minimum number of disk
units in a parity set is 4. The maximum number of disk units in a parity set
is 10.</div>

of disk units in a parity set is 4. The maximum number of disk units in a
parity set is 18.</p>

<div class="section"><h4 class="sectiontitle">Start device parity protection</h4><ol><li>In iSeries™ Navigator,
expand <span class="uicontrol">Disk Units</span>.</li>
<li>Select the disk units for which you want to start device parity protection.</li>
<li>Right-click a selected disk unit and select <span class="uicontrol">Start Parity</span>.</li>
<li><img src="./delta.gif" alt="Start of change" />Select the level of RAID protection you want.<img src="./deltaend.gif" alt="End of change" /></li>
<li>From the resulting window, click <span class="uicontrol">Start Parity</span> to
start device parity protection on the displayed disk units.</li>
