LAN line speed considerations for IOPs

When configuring an iSeries™ server with communications lines and local area
networks (LANs), you should not overload an input/output processor (IOP) to
prevent possible system performance bottlenecks.

The following tips and information can help you to understand the line
speed considerations for IOPs.

For the best performance use a 2843 IOP with one of the following IOAs:

Token Ring: 2744 100/16/4 Mbps Token Ring card

10/100 Ethernet: 2838 IOA card

Gigabit Ethernet: 2743 or 5700 IOA for fiber optic connections or the
2760 or the 5701 IOA for UTP connections to the network

Check that you do not have the LAN IOA running under an IOP that is also
running a DASD IOA. The DASD IOA causes slower performance on the LAN IOA
and you cannot reset the LAN adapter if there is a problem with it.

When analyzing communications performance on a LAN line, you should be
aware that resources other than the IOP use can become the bottleneck.

You should have the highest capacity IOP available for file serving. You
should have the highest capacity IOP available for environments that use many
communications input and output operations for each transaction. The highest
capacity IOP also minimizes the overall response time.
