<h1 class="topictitle1">Time zone</h1>
<div><p>Use this information to understand the time zones that are included
with the system and their properties. You can use one of the time zones included
with the system or create your own.</p>
<p>You can specify a time zone for each system in your business environment.
The time zone setting specifies the offset from coordinated universal time
(UTC) and whether to observe daylight saving time (DST) or not. If you specify
to observe DST, the system automatically updates the system time when DST
begins and ends. You do not need to manually set the system time when DST
begins and ends.</p>
<p>You can use one of the IBM-supplied time zones or create your own. If you
want to edit one of the supplied time zones, you should create a new time
zone based on the existing time zone. This prevents your changes from being
lost when installing i5/OS™ in the future. When i5/OS is installed, the system-supplied
time zones are overwritten. All IBM-supplied time zone identifiers begin with
the character Q and the time zone names are retrieved from the QCPFMSGQ message
file. If you create a time zone (new or based on an existing time zone), it
is recommended that the time zone identifier does not begin with the character
Q. By doing this, all time zone identifiers that begin with the character
Q are reserved for IBM<sup>®</sup>.</p>
<p>Use the time zone (QTIMZON) system value to specify the time zone for your
system to use. To use the time zone system value, you must be using i5/OS V5R3 or
later. For more information about how the initial value is determined, see
Initial time zone setting.</p>
<p>The following table identifies the time zones included with the system:</p>
