A data migration is the process of moving data from one iSeries™ server
to a new iSeries server
where the source server and the target server have different serial numbers.
To become familiar with the terminology used in this topic, see Migration
terminology.

Data migration process

The data migration process
includes planning, ordering, preparing for, and performing the data migration.
Planning is most involved and may require up to six weeks, depending on the
complexity of your environment. Installing the i5/OS™ release
on the source server requires at least one hour. Migrating the data from the
source server to the target server can normally be accomplished in up to three
days.
