Operational considerations for saving storage

Consider the following things before you save storage:

You can only run the save storage process when the server is in a restricted
state.

The user must have save system (*SAVSYS) special authority to use the
Save Storage (SAVSTG) command.

The SAVSTG command causes the server to power down and starts the server
again as though you specified PWRDWNSYS RESTART(*YES). An initial program
load (IPL) of the server occurs after the command completes. The save storage
function implicitly occurs during the IPL of the server from the dedicated
service tools (DST) function.
Attention logical partitioning users:

If you are going to use this command on the primary partition, be sure
to power off all secondary partitions before running the command.

In order to save your entire system configuration, you must save each
logical partition individually.

You can save the first tape without an operator being present. After you
save the first tape, DST messages appear that ask for the next tape so the
save operation can continue.

As the amount of storage on the server increases, the chance of an irrecoverable
media error increases. Clean the tape unit frequently.

You must specify a device name on the command. Expiration date (EXPDATE)
and clear (CLEAR) parameters are optional. You cannot specify a volume ID.

The save storage process does not start unless the console is available.
If the console is not available, a system reference code appears on the control
panel.

When the save storage operation completes successfully, a normal IPL occurs.
