Considerations for the SWTDSC parameter that can affect error recovery

By default, the value for the switched disconnect (SWTDSC) parameter is
set to *YES for advanced program-to-program communications (APPC). This setting
is the best for switched connections. It allows a switched line to be disconnected
when the application is no longer using the line. You may want to consider
changing the parameter value for error recovery to eliminate unnecessary disconnections.
These unnecessary disconnections cause the iSeries™ server to do more work to disconnect
then later reconnect. A common environment where this occurs is with personal
computers on local area networks (LAN) that use the Client Access for Windows® or iSeries Access for Windows licensed program. The SWTDSC parameter
is on the CHGCTLxxx or CRTCTLxxx command.

To change the SWTDSC parameter, consider the following:

For personal computers that are connected to a local area network, set
the SWTDSC parameter to *NO. Connections between personal computers with V
installed, and the iSeries server may be automatically disconnected if the
following conditions exist:

The V router is started

An application such as a 5250 emulation session or a network drive is not running over the connection

The application does not start within the time limit that is specified
by the disconnect timer (DSCTMR) parameter

Note:

If you have a switched line that incurs charges, you
should continue to use SWTDSC(*YES).
