<div><p>Verify these points before you install software on a new server.</p>
<p>If
you have not already done so, complete the tasks in the <span class="keyword">iSeries™ Information Center</span> topic <a href="rzahcswsplnlist.htm#rzahcswsplnlist">Preparing to install the i5/OS release</a>.</p>
<div class="note"><span class="notetitle">Note:</span> If you have added a new disk unit to your <span>server</span>, you should
load the operating system again to use that disk unit. This will improve
the performance of your server by distributing the operating system across
all of your disk units. Complete <a href="non.htm#non">Installing software on a new server or logical partition (without i5/OS installed)</a> if you
are adding disk units. If you are planning to use device parity protection,
auxiliary storage pools, or mirrored protection, refer to the book <cite>Backup
and Recovery, <span>SC41-5304-07</span></cite>, before you begin.</div>
<div class="p"><strong>Do you plan to use logical partitions?</strong> For iSeries 8xx and earlier models, read
the topic <a href="../rzait/rzaitoverview.htm">Plan
for logical partitions</a> . For <span>IBM<sup>®</sup> <span class="keyword">System i5</span>, System p5, and IBM eServer™ i5
and p5 systems</span>, read the topic <a href="../icbase/iphbl/planlpar.htm" target="_blank">Planning for logical partitions</a> .

<tbody><tr><td align="left" valign="top" width="100%" headers="d0e79 "><div class="p">If you perform these actions on a system with logical
partitions, the instructions pertain only to that partition. If that partition
is a primary partition, these instructions will change the power status and
perform an IPL on the entire system. There is no effect if you are on a system
managed by Hardware Management Console.<div class="note"><span class="notetitle">Attention:</span> If
you are installing on a primary partition, you must shut down all partitions
before performing these instructions. Otherwise, you could <span>lose</span> data
or damage system software objects. You must perform these instructions for
each partition with which you will do the related work. Also, references to
the control panel refer either to the virtual control panel (Work with Partition
Status display) on your primary partition.</div>
