Install fixes on systems managed by Hardware Management Console

Start of changeThis topic describes how to install i5/OS™ fixes when your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console. End of change

As the system administrator or system operator who manages the software level on your systems or partitions, you have two choices for performing this task for systems that are managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC):

You can perform a server IPL from two different sources: the T side or the P side. The T side is considered the temporary side, which is the equivalent of the B IPL source on the iSeries™ server. The P side is considered the permanent side, which is the equivalent of the A IPL source on the iSeries server. These IPL sources do not have to synchronized. Normally, the service partition is running on the B IPL source, and the code for the server firmware is running from the T side. The DSPPTF command shows the copy of the Start of changeserver firmwareEnd of change that was used on the previous server IPL in the IPL source header field (##SERV#T or ##SERV#P).

When fixes are applied to or removed from the Start of changeserver firmwareEnd of change portion of the Licensed Internal Code, a message is sent that indicates if any of the PTFs require a server IPL. You can use the DSPPTF command to determine which PTFs require a server IPL to activate the changes. The Server IPL required field is set to None; ##SERV#T or ##SERV#P indicates which IPL source to use when performing the server IPL. It is not sufficient to perform an IPL on only the service partition to activate the code; you must power down all the partitions at the same time.
