Logical partition requirements for alternate IPL devices

After partitions are defined, the Licensed Internal Code and operating system must be loaded from either optical or tape to the load source disk unit for the logical partition.

During partition setup, you must select which I/O processor (IOP) connects to the alternate Initial Program Load (IPL) device (either tape device or optical device).

An IBM® external tape device, or equivalent, that is attached to an IOA that supports alternate IPL, and can be attached to a system on which you can create partitions, can be used as a alternate IPL device. There is no support for external CD-ROM devices on 6xx, 7xx, Sxx systems. For 8xx servers, you can attach a 7210 external CD-ROM to a 2768.

Note: When attaching an external CD-ROM as an alternate IPL device, it must be at hardware Unit Address 5, Unit Address 6, or Unit Address 7. The following table shows the translation from SCSI to hardware Unit Addresses.

IOP considerations

IOP considerations are as follows:

The following are requirements for alternate IPL devices:

The LPAR Validation Tool (LVT) Link outside Information Center, as well as the System Handbook, show the internal tape alternate IPL devices that are supported by logical partitions based on the server ordered.

The following table shows the internal CD-ROM alternate IPL devices that are supported by logical partitions.

Rules for secondary partition alternate IPL IOP

Hardware requirements allow only certain IOPs to be used as the alternate IPL IOP in a secondary partition. Some of these IOPs must be in specific card positions in their expansions units. The IOP, specified during partition setup, must be one of the following:

Rules for secondary partition internal alternate IPL devices

The alternate IPL device is in the same expansion unit as its controlling IOP. It must be placed as follows:
