Secure e-mail

You can learn the procedures for using firewalls, restricting relays and connections, and filtering out viruses.

It is important to promote a secure environment in your iSeries™ Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server. You must protect your SMTP server and your users from internal and external hindrances.

• Send e-mail through a router or firewall
  An e-mail router is an intermediate system that Simple Message Transfer Protocol (SMTP) delivers mail to when it cannot locate the recipient's exact IP address.
• Restrict relays
  A common concern that you might face is protecting your server from people who try to use your e-mail server for spamming, or sending large amounts of bulk e-mail. To avoid these problems, use the relay restriction function to specify as closely as possible who can use your server for relay.
• Restrict connections
  You can prevent the connection of users who might abuse your e-mail server.
• Filter e-mail to prevent virus proliferation
  There are times when a well-known virus might be trying to infiltrate your e-mail servers. To help prevent the spread of the virus, you can create filters to look for a particular subject, type, file name, and originator's address in incoming e-mail. The e-mail can then be quarantined or discarded.
