Create an IPv6 local area network

This scenario describes how to create an IPv6 local area network.

Situation

IPv6 will eventually replace IPv4 as the Internet standard. Consequently, your company decides to implement IPv6 for its financial operations and purchases a new accounting application that uses IPv6 for connectivity. The application needs to connect to another instance of the application that is located on a different server connected to the site Ethernet local area network (LAN). Your job is to configure your server for IPv6 so that your firm may start using the accounting application. The following figure illustrates the network setup in this scenario.

Solution

To create an IPv6 LAN, you must configure an Ethernet line description. IPv6 packets travel between iSeries™ servers and clients on the network as employees use the accounting application.

Configuration

To configure IPv6, you must use iSeries Navigator. IPv6 can only be configured from iSeries Navigator, and cannot be configured from the character-based interface.

Start the IPv6 stack using the STRIP6 (*YES) parameter on the STRTCP command. Use the actions on individual lines in the Lines folder to specify line configuration options. For information about having IPv6 addresses configured automatically by the iSeries Navigator, see Configure IPv6 stateless address autoconfiguration.
