Ping

You can use the Packet Internet Groper (Ping) function to test IP-level connectivity between two TCP/IP-capable interfaces or systems.

Ping sends out a special IP packet to a specified host. If the destination host receives this special packet, it replies to you with a message which indicates to you that you can communicate with that host. You can use the Ping utility in two different ways:
  • Use it to test your local TCP/IP configuration. For example, after setting up TCP/IP on the server for the first time you can use Ping to test the TCP/IP configuration.
  • Use Ping to test your ability to communicate with other hosts on the local or remote networks.
Note: You can use Ping for both IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity.
