Ping sends out a special IP packet to a specified
host. If the destination host receives this special packet, it replies to
you with a message which indicates to you that you can communicate with that
host. You can use the Ping utility in two different ways:
- Use it to test your local TCP/IP configuration. For example, after setting
up TCP/IP on the server for the first time you can use Ping to test the TCP/IP
configuration.
- Use Ping to test your ability to communicate with other hosts on the local
or remote networks.
