Completing the installation of RHEL 3 on the IXS or IXA

This topic discusses the steps necessary to complete the Red Hat Enterprise Linux® installation

To complete the installation of a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 ES or AS (RHEL 3) server:

  1. The server boots and dialog will display, Do you have a driver disk? Select Yes and press Enter.
  2. If the installation detects multiple devices that could serve as sources for a driver disk, select fd0 and press Enter.
  3. You will be prompted to insert the driver diskette into the drive. After you insert the driver diskette into the drive, press Enter. There will be a message indicating that it is reading the driver diskette and then loading the ibmixsvs driver.
  4. You will be prompted to load more driver disks. There is no need to do this. Select No and press Enter.
  5. The Red Hat graphical interface will start. You can continue through the installation making selections as you prefer however specific selections are required on the Disk Partitioning Setup and Boot Loader Configuration screens.
  6. When the installation displays the Disk Partitioning Setup screen, you can choose to automatically partition the disk or manually partition the disk using Disk Druid. Unless you are an experienced user, we recommend that you choose to automatically partition the disk.
Important: The install drive (/dev/sdb) FAT partition must not be modified. Otherwise the server will not boot.
    To use automatic partitioning:
    a. Select Automatically partition and click Next.
    b. Two disks are displayed, /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. Remove the check before /dev/sdb so that /dev/sda is the only drive checked and select Remove all partitions on this system. Click on Next, then click Yes on the warning message.
    c. Review the partition setup on the Disk Setup display. Click Next.
  7. When the installation displays the Boot Loader Configuration screen, you must make sure that the GRUB boot loader will be installed on /dev/sda. Click Next.
  8. Continue on with installation making selections as you prefer. When you are done making selections, the installation will prompt you for CD-ROMs. When this phase is finished, the server will reboot.
  9. After the server reboots, the Setup Agent will guide you through some basic configuration. You can continue through the setup as you prefer; however, specific selections are required on the Red Hat Login and Why Register screens. The reason is that Red Hat updates can not be applied to your server until the post-installation instructions have been completed which are in the section titled Completing the post-installation tasks.
  10. On the Red Hat Login screen, select Tell me why I need to register and provide a Red Hat login and click Next.
  11. On the Why Register screen, select I can not complete registration at this time. Remind me later and click Next.
  12. When the setup phases are complete, you will be prompted to sign on to the sever. Please follow the instructions described in the section titled Completing the post-installation tasks of the Redbook.
  13. Once the post-installation instructions are complete, you can apply Red Hat updates to your server.

Important: After applying Red Hat updates, you must run ixsupdt before you reboot your server. Details for ixsupdt are listed in the section titled Maintaining the Linux integration code.
