Configure a logical partition

A logical partition on an iSeries™ server can support Linux, a non-OS/400 operating system.

Note: To run Linux in a logical partition, you must have V5R4 or later without an Hardware Management Console running in the primary partition.

Prerequisites

Back up your server
Before creating new partitions on the server, refer to instructions on performing a full server back up.
Configure the service tools server
In order to access logical partition functions, you must first configure the service tools server.
iSeries Navigator
iSeries Navigator provides a graphical wizard to help create logical partitions. It comes packaged with iSeries Access for Windows® and does not require an iSeries Access license to use. You will find detailed instructions and explanations in iSeries Navigator help topics.
To create a logical partition, follow these steps:
  1. In iSeries Navigator, expand My Connections or your active environment.
  2. Select the primary partition of the server.
  3. Expand Configuration and Service and select Logical Partitions.
  4. Right-click the physical server and select Configure Partitions.
  5. From the Configure Logical Partition display, right-click the Physical System and select New Logical Partitions to start the wizard.
