Plan for e-mail

Before setting up e-mail, you should have a basic plan for how you will be using e-mail on your iSeries™ server.

Before you start setting up e-mail, answer the following questions:

  1. What will my e-mail addresses look like?
  2. What is the IP address of my Domain Name Server (DNS)?
  3. Do I have a firewall? If the answer is yes, what is its IP address?
  4. Do I have a mail proxy, mail router, or mail relay? If the answer is yes, what is its IP address?
  5. Will I be using a Domino® database?
  6. Will I be using iSeries POP to receive mail?

You might want to refer to the e-mail example for basic information about how e-mail works.

If you will be using Domino and iSeries SMTP, refer to Hosting a Domino and SMTP server on the same iSeries server. For additional information about Domino, refer to the Domino topic or the Lotus® Domino on iSeries home page.

When you are ready to set up e-mail, use the steps provided in Configure e-mail.

Control e-mail access provides tips for protecting your e-mail servers from flooding and spamming.

If you do not plan to use the SMTP or POP servers, disable them to ensure that they will not be used without your knowledge.
