External networks

Start of changeAn integrated Windows server can participate in external networks just as you can with a normal PC server. There are different ways to do this. In an IXA or iSCSI attached integrated server there are PCI expansion slots available, so you can use any integrated network adapter or install a network adapter card as you would in a PC. An IXS is a PC server on a card which is installed in a PCI slot within the iSeries™. It has no PCI expansion slots. Some IXSs can control the iSeries PCI slot adjacent to where it is installed, and in this way 'take over' an iSeries network adapter. In addition, type 2892 and 4812 IXS models contain an integrated Ethernet network adapter.End of change

For the procedure explaining how to physically install network adapter cards for your IXS or xSeries® and how to configure them for use with integrated servers, see External networks.
