Spool Performance Considerations

As hardware capacity and workloads on the iSeries(TM) increase, considerations should be made to ensure performance of spool operations are efficient. For many customers, the operating system enhancements to increase the number of jobs on the system has resulted in additional spooled files. Because of this, lock contention on spool related objects can occur.

This experience report documents information about spool performance considerations. It is intended to help those customers that are experiencing concerns. Specifically, this report will:

  • Identify spool objects that are most likely to encounter lock contention
  • Provide information about messages that can be expected if performance bottlenecks are encountered
  • Identify several scenarios that can cause spool performance problems
  • Provide recommendations to reduce specific spool performance issues
