<div><p>The mode selections for a PPP connection profile include selections
for the <strong>connection type</strong> and the <strong>operating mode</strong>. Your mode selections
specify how your server uses the new PPP connection.</p>

<ol><li><span>Select one of the following connection types:</span><ul><li>Switched line</li>
<li>Leased line</li>
<li>L2TP (virtual line)</li>
<li>PPPoE line</li>
</ul>

<li><span>Select the operating mode that is appropriate for the new PPP connection.</span></li>
<li><span>Record the connection type and operating mode that you selected.
You need this information when you start to configure your PPP connections.</span></li>

<li class="ulchildlink"><strong><a href="rzaiyswline.htm">Switched line</a></strong><br />
Select this connection type if you are using one of the following to connect over a telephone line: Modem (internal or external) or External ISDN terminal adapter.</li>
<li class="ulchildlink"><strong><a href="rzaiylsdline.htm">Leased line</a></strong><br />
Select this connection type if you have a dedicated line between
the local iSeries™ server
and the remote system. If you have a leased line, you do not need a modem
or an ISDN terminal adapter to connect the two systems.</li>
<li class="ulchildlink"><strong><a href="rzaiyvrtline.htm">L2TP (virtual line)</a></strong><br />
Select this connection type to provide a connection between systems that use Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP).</li>
<li class="ulchildlink"><strong><a href="rzaiypppoeline.htm">PPPoE line</a></strong><br />
Point-to-Point over Ethernet (PPPoE) connections use a virtual line to send PPP data (through an Ethernet adapter) to a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) modem provided by your Internet service provider (ISP). The modem is also connected to the Ethernet-based LAN.</li>
