<h1 class="topictitle1">Create a name server instance</h1>
<div><p>Use the New Domain Name System (DNS) Configuration
wizard to define a DNS server instance.</p>
<div class="section">To start the <span class="uicontrol">New DNS Configuration</span> wizard,
follow these steps:</div>
<ol><li><span>In <span class="uicontrol">iSeries Navigator</span>, expand <span class="menucascade"><span class="uicontrol">your iSeries server</span> &gt; <span class="uicontrol">Network</span> &gt; <span class="uicontrol">Servers</span> &gt; <span class="uicontrol">DNS</span></span>.</span></li>
<li><span>In the left pane, right-click <span class="uicontrol">DNS</span> and select <span class="uicontrol">New
Name Server...</span></span></li>
<li><span>The wizard can guide you through the configuration process.</span></li>
</ol>
<div class="section"><p>The wizard requires the following input:</p>
<dl><dt class="dlterm">DNS server name:</dt>
<dd>Enter a name for your DNS server. It can be up to 5 characters long and
must start with an alphabetic character. If you create multiple servers, each
must have a unique name. This name is referred to as the DNS server "instance"
name in other areas of the system.</dd>
<dt class="dlterm">Listen-on IP addresses:</dt>
<dd>Two DNS servers cannot listen on the same IP address. The default setting
is to listen on ALL IP addresses. If you are creating additional server instances,
neither can be configured to listen on ALL. You must specify the IP addresses
for each server.</dd>
<dt class="dlterm">Root servers:</dt>
<dd>You might load the list of default Internet root servers or specify your
own root servers, such as internal root servers for an intranet. <div class="note"><span class="notetitle">Note:</span> You
should only consider loading the default Internet root servers if you are
on the Internet and expect your DNS to be able to fully resolve Internet names.</div>
</dd>
<dt class="dlterm">Server start-up:</dt>
<dd>You can specify whether the server should autostart when TCP/IP is started.
When you operate multiple servers, individual instances can be started and
ended independently of each other.</dd>
