<div><p>System-managed access-path protection (SMAPP) provides automatic
protection for access paths.</p>
<div class="section"><p>Using the SMAPP support, you do not have to use the journaling
commands, such as the <span class="cmdname">Start Journal Access Path (STRJRNAP)</span> command,
to get the benefits of access path journaling. SMAPP support recovers access
paths after an abnormal server end rather than rebuilding them during IPL,
or the vary on of an independent ASP.</p>

<div class="section"><p>The SMAPP support is turned on with the shipped system.</p>

<div class="section"><p>The server determines which access paths to protect based on target
access path recovery times provided by the user or by using a server-provided
default time. The target access path recovery times can be specified as a
server-wide value or on an ASP basis. Access paths that are being journaled
to a user-defined journal are not eligible for SMAPP protection because they
are already protected. </p>
