Overview

This topic briefly describes what is needed for planning and installing.

The capability to install Linux® on the Integrated xSeries® Server
and Integrated xSeries Adapter
is provided by products 5722-SS1 option 29 and 5722-LSV. You can find information
specific to Linux integration
on iSeries™ at
the Web site:

http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/integratedxseries/linux/

The Intel-based hardware on which iSeries Linux integration support can be installed
is the same hardware that is utilized by the iSeries i5/OS Integrated Server Support
(5722-SS1 option 29) product, and the software that provides the integration
support for Windows® also provides integration support for Linux.
The Integrated xSeries Server
is hardware that has been designed to allow customers to simplify their server
environment by reducing the hardware footprint of their Intel-based servers,
and by providing a degree of centralized management. The Integrated xSeries Server
is installed inside the frame of the iSeries, or an iSeries tower, and does not consume the
space that a standalone server box might. You can find more information about
the Integrated xSeries Server
at the Web site:

http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/integratedxseries/ixs_overview.html

Linux implementations on the Integrated xSeries platforms make use of virtual
services provided by i5/OS™,
and have some other differences compared with Linux running on a PC that it
is helpful to be aware of. For a discussion of what is different about integrated
servers you might want to read the Concepts article in the Windows environment
on iSeries topic.

There is extensive documentation on the Features and benefits of Windows and Linux integration
on iSeries at
the following Web site:

http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/integratedxseries/

It is strongly recommend that you review this documentation if you are
not already familiar with the product.
