<div><p><span>You can use an optical image catalog to perform
a software upgrade, install PTFs (fixes), or install single licensed programs
that you receive on CD-ROM or optical media. You can also use a tape image
catalog and a virtual tape <span>device to install PTFs
or to install single</span> licensed programs. You cannot, however, use a virtual
tape device to install or upgrade to an <span class="keyword">i5/OS™</span> release. </span></p>
<p>An <em>image
catalog</em> is an object on the server that contains optical images. Each
catalog is associated with one user-specified integrated file system directory.
The system-recognized identifier for the object type is *IMGCLG. </p>
<div class="p"><strong>Image catalog requirements:</strong> <ul><li>An image catalog upgrade works like a D-mode IPL without a console during
the installation of Licensed Internal Code. <span>Reference codes</span> are used
to display the status.</li>
<li>Installations done by using image catalogs require an <span class="keyword">i5/OS</span> control
language (CL) command line to initiate the installation.</li>
<li>An installation cannot be performed if an independent auxiliary storage
pool (ASP) is accessible. Image files cannot reside in an independent ASP.</li>
<li>Virtual optical devices do not support the following: <ul><li>Write operations (prior to V5R3)</li>
<li>The LODRUN command using multiple media.</li>
<li>Changing a primary language from secondary language media.</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li><span>To perform an installation using image catalogs, you must
have at least 1074 MB</span> of free storage on the load-source disk unit. <a href="prepareimagecatalog.htm#prepareimagecatalog">Preparing to upgrade or replace software using an image catalog</a> describes how
to calculate storage requirements and free up space in the load-source disk
